Glances were exchanged and a few times we saw them whispering confidences in her ear. Side by side, queen Letizia of Spain and her mother in law the former queen Sofia did not hide their complicity this Monday January 23rd 2017 in Madrid as they presented on Monday the National Sport Awards 2017. In the company of their respective spouses King Felipe VI and his father the former Spanish sovereign Juan Carlos, the two women participated in the palace of the Pardo at the delivery of the "Premios Nacionales del Deporte 2015". Awarded by the Higher Sports Council, these awards recognize individuals or entities who make an exceptional contribution to the promotion or dissemination of Spanish sport.

Dressed in a tweed dress which features cropped sleeves and a nipped waist, on her feet were a bespoke version of the Magrit 'Laura' pumps paired with her TOUS ruby, emerald and moonstone earrings, while Sofia appeared in a cherry red tailor, Letizia was entrusted with the task of awarding the prize named after her, the "Premio Reina Letizia". Sacrifying the Spanish athlete who distinguished himself most during the year in his sporting performance, both nationally and internationally, was Ruth Beitia. This European champion in high jump was in 2015 the first athlete of Spain to win the Diamond League, trophy awarded to the winners of the general classification in his discipline. And it did not stop at the moment since the young woman of 37 returned with a gold medal of the last Olympic Games disputed at Rio de Janeiro 2016.
Another member of the Spanish royal family was present at this ceremony. The 80-year-old Princess Pilar de Bourbon, the elder sister of Juan Carlos, was photographed in the audience.
